Namibia Ends Visa-Free Entry for US Citizens Amid Reciprocity Concerns

WINDHOEK, Namibia – As of April 1, 2025, Namibia has revoked visa-free entry for citizens of the United States, the United Kingdom, and over 30 other countries. This policy change, approved by Namibia's cabinet in July 2024, is aimed at fostering reciprocity in visa arrangements with countries that do not offer similar visa-free access to Namibian passport holders.

The decision marks a significant shift from previous arrangements, where US tourists could visit Namibia for up to 90 days without a visa. Now, travelers from affected countries must apply for a visa online in advance or obtain one upon arrival at designated entry points, such as Hosea Kutako International Airport and Walvis Bay Harbour.

Namibia's first female president, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, has supported this move, emphasizing the need for fair and balanced diplomatic relations. The change reflects growing frustration across Africa over strict visa policies imposed by Western nations, which often deny visa-free entry to African citizens.

The tourism industry in Namibia has expressed concerns about potential impacts on visitor numbers, particularly from long-haul markets like Germany, which was previously a major source of tourists. However, officials remain optimistic that the new visa system will enhance Namibia's position as a top destination for adventure and wildlife tourism.

Visa fees have been set at approximately USD 90 for non-African countries and USD 70 for African Union citizens. Despite these changes, Namibia aims to streamline travel processes through its online visa portal, reducing wait times at immigration counters.
