President Mahama Suspends Ghana’s Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo Amid Misconduct Investigation

Justice Gertrude Torkornoo

In a landmark decision shaking Ghana’s judiciary and political landscape, President John Dramani Mahama has suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo with immediate effect. The suspension follows the receipt of three formal petitions alleging misconduct against the Chief Justice, prompting the President and the Council of State to determine that a prima facie case exists.

Acting under Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution, President Mahama has constituted a five-member committee to conduct a thorough investigation into the allegations. The Chief Justice will remain suspended by presidential warrant until the committee completes its probe and submits its findings.

The Office of the President disclosed the development in a statement on Tuesday but withheld specific details about the nature of the allegations contained in the petitions. The statement confirmed that consultations with the Council of State preceded the suspension and the establishment of the investigative panel.

Gertrude Torkornoo, Ghana’s third female Chief Justice, was nominated by former President Nana Akufo-Addo and assumed office in June 2023. Earlier this year, she reportedly survived a previous removal attempt when President Akufo-Addo dismissed a petition against her due to identified deficiencies.

This latest move marks a significant constitutional process, underscoring Ghana’s commitment to judicial accountability and the rule of law. The investigation is expected to be closely watched by legal experts, political analysts, and the Ghanaian public alike.
