Protest Erupts in Otukpo Over Incessant Killings and Kidnappings

Otukpo, Benue State, April 1, 2025 – Angry residents of Otukpo, Benue State, have flooded the streets today in a massive protest against the escalating wave of killings and kidnappings plaguing their community. Demonstrators, chanting "We no go gree!" effectively blocked major roads, bringing traffic to a standstill as they voiced their frustration and demanded immediate intervention from both the government and security agencies.

The протеst, fueled by fear and desperation, highlights the growing insecurity that has gripped Otukpo in recent months. Residents say the relentless violence has forced many to abandon their homes, while those who remain are living in a state of perpetual fear.

Allegations of Collusion

One protester, Daniel Oche, voiced the sentiments of many, lamenting the frequent attacks and describing them as a "constant recurrence." Oche also made a startling allegation, claiming that electricity is consistently cut off in the community prior to each attack. "This has been happening again and again. We are not safe in our own homes," he stated. "And have you noticed? NEPA (JEDC) always takes light before every operation. It’s like they don’t want us to see what’s coming." This accusation has added a new layer of complexity to the crisis, raising concerns about possible collusion and internal sabotage.

 Authorities Yet to Respond

As of midday, security operatives have not been deployed to manage the situation, leaving protesters to continue their demonstration unimpeded. The absence of a security presence has fueled speculation and further heightened tensions in the area. The protesters are demanding a swift and decisive response from authorities to address the insecurity and bring the perpetrators of these heinous crimes to justice. The situation in Otukpo remains tense, and further updates will be provided as they become available.
