Trump Authorizes 90-Day Pause on Most Tariffs, Escalates Levies on China

Trump has announced a 90-day pause on most of the new tariffs he recently imposed on nearly 60 countries.

In a surprise move, President Donald Trump has announced a 90-day pause on most of the new tariffs he recently imposed on nearly 60 countries. However, this reprieve does not extend to China, which will face even higher tariffs. Trump increased tariffs on Chinese goods to 125%, citing China's retaliatory measures as the reason for this escalation.

The decision to pause tariffs on most countries was made after several days of intense market volatility and criticism from both domestic and international partners. Trump's initial tariffs had sparked fears of a global trade war and potential recession, leading to significant losses in stock markets worldwide. The pause is seen as an attempt to ease tensions and encourage other nations to engage in trade negotiations.

Despite the pause, China remains a focal point of Trump's trade policy. Beijing had recently increased its tariffs on U.S. goods to 84%, prompting Trump to raise U.S. tariffs on Chinese imports to 125%. This move is part of a broader strategy to pressure China into negotiating a more favorable trade agreement.

The financial markets reacted positively to the news, with major stock indexes experiencing significant gains. The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged nearly 7%, while the S&P 500 rose by over 7% and the Nasdaq climbed by more than 12%. This marked one of the best days for U.S. stocks in recent years, reflecting investor relief that the immediate threat of higher tariffs has been temporarily alleviated.

However, economists remain cautious, warning that the pause may not prevent a recession and that ongoing tensions with China could still have long-term economic implications.

The U.S. and China continue to engage in a high-stakes game of economic brinkmanship, with both sides showing little willingness to back down. As the 90-day pause unfolds, global attention will remain focused on whether this temporary reprieve can lead to lasting trade agreements or if it merely delays further conflict.
