US Tourist Arrested for Landing on Forbidden Indian Tribal Island

A 24-year-old US tourist, Mykhailo Viktorovych Polyakov, has been arrested by Indian authorities for landing on North Sentinel Island, a highly restricted area in the Andaman Islands. Polyakov's actions were part of an apparent attempt to make contact with the Sentinelese tribe, one of the world's most isolated indigenous communities.

Background

North Sentinel Island is home to the Sentinelese, a tribe that has consistently expressed its desire to remain isolated from the outside world. The Indian government has enforced strict protections to safeguard the tribe from external diseases and preserve their traditional way of life, prohibiting all outsiders, including Indians and foreigners, from approaching within five kilometers of the island.

Incident Details

Polyakov arrived on the island carrying a coconut and a can of Diet Coke, which he left as offerings on the beach. He attempted to attract the tribe's attention by blowing a whistle for about an hour before briefly landing on the shore for approximately five minutes. During his short stay, he collected sand samples and recorded a video using a GoPro camera. The footage confirmed his unauthorized entry into the restricted area.

Previous Attempts

This was not Polyakov's first attempt to reach the island. He had visited the region twice before, once in October 2024 and again in January 2025, but was thwarted in his previous attempts. On this occasion, he used a motorized inflatable boat to navigate the open sea from the main archipelago.

Legal Consequences

Polyakov was arrested late on Monday, about two days after his landing, and was presented before a local court. He is currently on a three-day remand for further questioning. If convicted, he could face up to eight years in prison for entering a restricted area.

Reactions

Survival International, a charity advocating for tribal rights, condemned Polyakov's actions as "profoundly alarming" and emphasized the risks such intrusions pose to the Sentinelese community, which lacks immunity to foreign diseases. The organization highlighted the growing threat from social media influencers seeking to capitalize on interactions with isolated tribes.

Historical Context

This incident follows a similar event in 2018 when American missionary John Allen Chau was killed by the Sentinelese after he landed on the island. Chau's body was never recovered, and no investigations were conducted due to Indian laws prohibiting access to the island.

Strategic Significance

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are strategically important for India, located along key global shipping lanes and closer to Myanmar than mainland India. New Delhi plans significant investments to enhance naval and air facilities in the region.

The arrest of Polyakov underscores the importance of enforcing protections for isolated indigenous communities and highlights the challenges faced by governments in balancing strategic interests with the preservation of unique cultural identities.
