Pakistan Witnesses Deadliest Month in a Decade as Militant Attacks Surge

March 2025 has been marked as the deadliest month in Pakistan in over a decade, with militant attacks and security responses resulting in the deaths of 335 people.

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan – March 2025 has been marked as the deadliest month in Pakistan in over a decade, with militant attacks and security responses resulting in the deaths of 335 people. This surge in violence is attributed to the heightened activities of Islamist militant groups like the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and separatist rebels such as the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA).

According to a report by the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS), more than 100 deadly attacks were recorded across the country during March. The TTP and BLA were identified as the primary groups responsible for these attacks. The BLA notably orchestrated a dramatic 28-hour hijacking of the Jaffar Express train in Balochistan, which resulted in over two dozen fatalities and highlighted the group's increasing capacity for complex operations.

Regional Impact

The most affected regions were Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Balochistan, in particular, faced significant violence, including the train hijacking incident. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, militant groups have targeted security forces and civilians alike, with suicide bombings becoming more frequent.

International Concerns

Pakistan has accused Afghanistan of harboring militants who plan and execute attacks from its territory. A recent UN report supported this claim, stating that the Taliban provided support to the TTP, and some attacks were launched from Afghan soil. The Afghan Taliban, however, denies providing sanctuary to these groups.

Government Response

In response to the escalating violence, Pakistan's security forces have intensified operations against militant groups. Many suspects have been arrested, and operations are ongoing to dismantle networks linked to the TTP and BLA.

The surge in militant attacks in Pakistan underscores the need for enhanced security measures and diplomatic efforts to address cross-border terrorism. The situation highlights the complex challenges faced by Pakistan in maintaining stability and security, particularly in regions like Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
