Former Governor of Rivers State and APC chieftain Rotimi Amaechi has called on Abia State Governor Alex Otti to reveal the source of funding for the extensive infrastructure projects transforming Abia. Amaechi made this request during a tour of ongoing projects in the state, accompanied by fellow University of Port Harcourt alumni who studied alongside Otti from 1980 to 1989.
Amaechi praised the quality and speed of the transformation, particularly the reconstruction of Port Harcourt Road in Aba, which he recalled was once littered with refuse and gullies. However, he emphasized the need for transparency in funding, noting that many governors face challenges due to limited federal allocations. He stressed that accountability in governance is crucial, especially when projects seem to defy typical financial constraints.
Governor Otti's Chief of Staff, Pastor Caleb Ajagba, attributed the state's progress to prudent financial management, zero tolerance for corruption, and good governance. Ajagba highlighted Otti's background as an economist, which reflects in his leadership style, ensuring every expenditure is justified and monitored.
Amaechi's comments come as Otti's administration gains recognition for its achievements, with former President Olusegun Obasanjo recently praising the governor's leadership and calling for his re-election in 2027. Despite the accolades, Amaechi's request for financial transparency underscores the importance of accountability in governance.
