Ugwuanyi, Ikpeazu, Shehu Sani, and Others Screened for Ambassadorial Appointments

The Federal Government of Nigeria has commenced the screening process for candidates nominated for diplomatic roles, aiming to fill vacant positions in its 76 embassies and 22 high commissions. Among those screened are former governors Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and Okezie Ikpeazu, as well as prominent figures Shehu Sani and Femi Fani-Kayode.

Screening Process

Nominees have been instructed to report to the nearest Department of State Services (DSS) offices for security checks. They are also required to provide detailed personal, educational, and work histories as part of the vetting process. This comprehensive screening is part of the government's efforts to ensure that only suitable candidates are appointed to represent Nigeria abroad.

Notable Nominees

- Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi: Former Governor of Enugu State.

- Okezie Ikpeazu: Former Governor of Abia State.

- Shehu Sani: Former Senator from Kaduna State, who recently joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

- Femi Fani-Kayode: Former Minister of Aviation.

- Reno Omokri: Former presidential aide.

- Femi Pedro: Former Deputy Governor of Lagos State.

Background

In September 2023, President Bola Tinubu recalled all Nigerian ambassadors, both career and non-career, leaving a significant gap in diplomatic leadership at various foreign missions. The presidency announced in March 2025 that replacements would be named soon, following a prolonged delay attributed to funding constraints.

Controversy Over Nominations

A Lagos-based group, the De Renaissance Patriots Foundation, has opposed the nomination of Femi Pedro as an ambassadorial candidate, arguing that he is not an indigene of Lagos State. The group claims that Pedro's appointment would unfairly represent the state's interests abroad.

The Federal Government is expected to announce the names of the new diplomats and their portfolios shortly. The ongoing screening process is a crucial step toward filling the diplomatic vacancies and restoring Nigeria's presence in international missions.
