Thirteen-year-old swimming sensation Michelle Ibidapo has captured national attention after winning the gold medal in the women’s 1,500-meter freestyle event at the ongoing National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Representing Team Oyo and a student of The Grange School, Ikeja, Michelle’s victory marks a remarkable milestone in her rapidly rising career. She first came into the spotlight after being discovered at the National Youth Games in Asaba, and her latest triumph at Nigeria’s premier multi-sport event underscores her progression through the competitive ranks.
Speaking after her race, Michelle reflected on her determination and focus: “Coming into this competition, I was focused. I had my mind on winning a medal, even though I wasn’t sure what colour. During the last lap, I reminded myself to stay focused, and by the end, it turned into gold.”
Michelle’s success is a testament to the impact of grassroots sports development programs like the Youth Games, which continue to identify and nurture young talent, providing them with opportunities to shine on bigger stages. Her achievement not only brings pride to Team Oyo but also serves as an inspiration to young athletes across Nigeria.
