The Enugu State Government has announced the completion of plans to launch a state-owned airline, introduce Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses, and construct modern transport terminals as part of its comprehensive strategy to transform the state’s transportation sector.
Governor Peter Mbah revealed these ambitious initiatives during a meeting with the leadership of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Enugu. He emphasized that these projects are designed to improve mobility, reduce transportation costs, and boost economic development across the state.
Key Highlights of the Transport Transformation Plan
1. State-Owned Airline:
Governor Mbah disclosed that the government has concluded arrangements to establish an Enugu State airline, which will enhance air connectivity, attract investment, and position Enugu as a major aviation hub in the South-East region.
2. Introduction of CNG Buses:
To address the challenge of rising fuel costs and promote environmental sustainability, the state will roll out a fleet of CNG-powered buses. These buses are expected to provide affordable, eco-friendly transportation for residents, while also reducing the state’s carbon footprint.
3. Construction of Modern Transport Terminals:
The government is set to build world-class transport terminals in key locations across Enugu. These terminals will serve as integrated hubs for buses, taxis, and other forms of public transport, improving efficiency and passenger experience.
Commitment to Workers and Economic Growth
Governor Mbah assured labour leaders that the new transport initiatives would create jobs, stimulate local businesses, and make commuting safer and more efficient for all citizens. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to delivering people-oriented projects and fostering inclusive economic growth.
Labour leaders at the event commended the government’s vision and pledged their support for the successful implementation of the transport reforms.
Looking Ahead
With these projects nearing implementation, Enugu State is poised to set a benchmark for modern, sustainable, and accessible transportation in Nigeria. The government’s proactive approach signals a new era of development, promising lasting benefits for residents, businesses, and the broader South-East region.
