At least five people have died in Assam, northeastern India, due to landslides triggered by intense monsoon rains, according to disaster management officials. The fatalities occurred in Kamrup Metropolitan district, where continuous heavy rainfall caused multiple landslides and urban flooding affecting thousands.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reported that flooding in three districts has impacted over 10,000 residents, with significant waterlogging in the state capital, Guwahati. The ongoing rains have led to school closures, special leave for government employees, and disruptions in daily life.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described the situation as critical, confirming that rescue operations are underway and relief supplies, including rice, have been dispatched. Authorities have issued a red alert for twelve districts, warning residents to stay indoors and avoid risky areas prone to landslides and floods.

The heavy monsoon rains, which typically begin in June and last through September, bring vital water but also pose serious risks, including landslides, floods, and fatalities across the region. Similar incidents have been reported in other northeastern states and southern India, with ongoing efforts to monitor and manage the situation.
