The paramount ruler of the Idoma Nation, His Royal Majesty Agaba’Idu Elaigwu Odogbo, has issued a directive ordering all armed Fulani herdsmen to vacate Idoma land with immediate effect. This decisive order was the highlight of a communique released after an emergency meeting held at the Och’Idoma’s Palace in Otukpo on Wednesday, which brought together the Idoma Area Traditional Council and local government chairmen.
The urgent meeting was convened in response to escalating insecurity and recent killings in the region, which have been attributed to armed Fulani herdsmen. The communique, signed by the monarch and other traditional leaders, expressed deep concern over what they described as “heinous acts of violence,” mourning the loss of innocent lives and calling for swift government intervention.
“All armed herdsmen are to be persuaded and directed to leave Idoma land immediately to prevent further conflicts and senseless killings of Idoma sons and daughters,” the council stated.
The traditional rulers also called on the Benue State Government to engage with herder groups to ensure that farmlands are vacated, allowing farming activities to resume without fear or intimidation. Residents were urged to remain vigilant and to cooperate with security agencies by reporting any suspicious movements or activities within their communities.
This strong stance by the Idoma traditional leadership underscores the urgent need for peace and security in the region, as well as the protection of lives and livelihoods of the Idoma people.
