PDP Accuses Imo Government of Wasting N2.1 Billion on Pilgrimage, Demands Governor Uzodimma’s Resignation

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo State has sharply criticized Governor Hope Uzodimma’s administration for allegedly approving the expenditure of N2.1 billion on the 2025 Hajj pilgrimage for 315 Muslims from Imo, Abia, and Bayelsa states. The pilgrimage was flagged off recently at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, with notable dignitaries including Vice President Kashim Shettima and the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III in attendance.

PDP’s Allegations and Concerns

- Wasteful Spending Amid Crisis: The PDP described the spending as “wasteful and insensitive,” especially given the worsening insecurity in Imo State, marked by arson, kidnappings, and killings.

- Misplaced Priorities: The party argued that the N2.1 billion could have been better utilized to improve the welfare of residents across Imo’s 27 local councils.

- Timing of the Event: The pilgrimage airlifting and the celebratory party hosted by the government took place just a day after a deadly attack in Okigwe, where at least 20 people were killed, others kidnapped, and over 22 vehicles set ablaze.

- Call for Resignation: In light of these issues, PDP demanded Governor Uzodimma’s resignation, accusing him of gross incompetence and tacitly endorsing the state’s insecurity.

Governor Uzodimma’s Defense and Actions

- Religious Tolerance and Development: Governor Uzodimma defended the expenditure by emphasizing Imo’s reputation for religious tolerance and stating that the pilgrimage event would open doors for economic development.

- Acknowledgment of Federal Support: He thanked President Bola Tinubu and other federal officials for their support in facilitating the event.

- Directive to Local Government Officials: At a recent stakeholders meeting, Uzodimma warned local government chairmen and councillors that those unwilling to reside within their council areas should resign, underscoring his commitment to good governance.

- Focus on Security and Welfare: The governor highlighted ongoing efforts to address insecurity, education, and healthcare, aiming to improve the quality of life for Imo residents.

This controversy highlights the tension between government spending priorities and public expectations amid insecurity and economic challenges. The PDP’s sharp criticism reflects growing political pressure on Governor Uzodimma’s administration to address security concerns and manage public funds more prudently.
