A devastating road accident claimed the lives of 21 athletes from Kano State on Saturday as they were returning from the just-concluded National Sports Festival held in Abeokuta, Ogun State. The fatal crash occurred at Dakatsalle Bridge in Kura Local Government Area, approximately 50 kilometers from Kano city.
According to eyewitnesses and officials, the bus carrying about 35 passengers, mainly athletes and officials, lost control and veered off the bridge. Nineteen athletes died instantly at the scene, while three others succumbed to their injuries at Kura General Hospital. Survivors were rushed to Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital in Kano for further medical attention following directives from the state government.
Umar Bala Fagge, Chairman of the Kano State Sports Commission, confirmed the tragedy and expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the young athletes. Among the deceased was the son of Salisu Jegus, a sports correspondent with Express Radio.
The Kano contingent had participated proudly in the festival, finishing 13th on the medals table with 29 medals, including six gold. The accident has sent shockwaves through Kano and the Nigerian sports community, with condolences pouring in from various quarters.
Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun expressed his grief, describing the athletes as “heroes whose patriotism and commitment to Kano State and Nigeria will never be forgotten.” He extended prayers to the families and the Kano government, urging calm and resilience in this tragic moment.
The incident has raised urgent calls for improved road safety measures, especially for vehicles transporting athletes and officials across Nigeria.
