Nigeria Labour Congress Demands Retirement Age Increase to 65 for All Civil Servants

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Thursday called for an upward review of the retirement age for all categories of civil servants from the current 60 years to 65 years, or from 35 years to 40 years of service, whichever comes first. The demand was made by NLC National President Joe Ajaero during the ongoing May Day celebration at Eagle Square, Abuja.

Ajaero emphasized that the revised retirement age of 65 years, which is currently enjoyed by teachers, health professionals, and judges, should be extended to all public servants to ensure equity and fairness across the public service. He noted that the extension is necessary as only a few establishments, including the core civil service, have not yet adopted the higher retirement age.

The call aligns with previous reforms where teachers’ retirement age was increased to 65 years under a law signed by former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2022, and health workers’ retirement age was also raised recently. Advocates argue that many civil servants remain productive and healthy beyond 60 and that retaining experienced workers can benefit national development.

However, the proposal has sparked debate. Some experts suggest that with Nigeria’s high unemployment rate-over 33% overall and 53% among youths-retirement age should be reduced to create more job opportunities for younger Nigerians. The National Council on Establishment has also rejected the upward review, citing the need for youth empowerment and population dynamics.

The NLC has vowed to engage President Bola Tinubu and the government in dialogue to push for the review, stressing that fair retirement policies are crucial for workers’ welfare and national progress. The debate continues as stakeholders weigh the benefits of retaining experienced civil servants against the urgent need to address youth unemployment.
