“I Won’t Be Tool for One-Party State” Tinubu’s SSA on Public Affairs, Aliyu Audu, Resigns

Aliyu Audu has resigned from his position as Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to President Bola Tinubu, citing concerns over the direction of Nigeria’s democracy under the current administration. In his resignation letter dated June 8, 2025, and addressed to the president’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, Audu stated that he refused to be used as an instrument to reduce Nigeria to a one-party state by the APC-led federal government.

Audu clarified that his decision was not an act of rebellion but one of conscience. He emphasized that while he does not align with the opposition PDP, he cannot participate in efforts to silence or crush opposition, warning that such actions betray democratic principles and risk repeating the mistakes of previous administrations. Audu stressed the importance of ideological pluralism, stating, “True democracy thrives on healthy competition, not political domination.”

He also noted that suppressing alternative voices is regressive and contrary to both democratic values and divine order, which upholds freedom of choice and diversity of thought. While Audu expressed continued support for the government’s economic reforms, he voiced disapproval of what he described as an “unholy alliance” between President Tinubu and Nyesom Wike, suggesting it undermines progressive and democratic ideals.

Audu concluded by reaffirming his commitment to promoting democratic values and engaging in robust political debate, even as he steps down from his official role.
