APC’s Mustapha Salihu Dismisses Rumours of Rift Between President Tinubu and VP Shettima as “Handled Internally”

Mustapha Salihu, National Vice Chairman (North-East) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has dismissed speculation of a rift between President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, describing such rumours as distractions fueled by “conflict entrepreneurs.” Speaking on Channels Television, Salihu emphasized that the administration and party affairs are managed internally, not through social media or press speculation.

Salihu addressed circulating reports suggesting that Shettima is being sidelined, especially amid the President’s extended stays abroad and the Vice President’s absence from key endorsement events for Tinubu’s potential second term. The rumours also hint at Shettima possibly seeking a new running mate ahead of the 2027 elections.

Responding to these claims, Salihu said, “These kinds of rumours are inevitable in every administration—people will always try to suggest friction between the principal and the Vice. It’s what some insecure politicians thrive on. But if you’re secure in yourself, you shouldn’t be bothered by such noise.” He further rejected suggestions of discontent within the APC’s North-East caucus, highlighting his recent engagements with party members from Taraba, Gombe, Bauchi, and Yobe states.

Salihu also clarified why Shettima was omitted from the recent North-East APC endorsement of Tinubu for a second term, explaining that endorsing the Vice President alongside the President before party primaries would be unconstitutional and premature. He stressed that the presidential candidate alone decides on the running mate after primaries.

The APC continues to project unity amid ongoing political maneuvering ahead of the 2027 general elections, with regional stakeholders advocating for equitable power sharing and zoning arrangements. However, party leaders maintain that internal processes will guide candidate selections, urging members and the public to disregard unfounded rumours.
