The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has condemned the activities of internet fraudsters known as "Yahoo boys," stating that their actions are bringing national shame to Nigeria and damaging the country’s reputation globally. Olukoyede emphasized that the widespread online scams carried out by these fraudsters have led to international embarrassment, causing Nigerians abroad to face increased suspicion and discrimination.
He urged Nigerian youths to avoid cybercrime and instead focus on legitimate and productive ventures that contribute positively to society. The EFCC boss also reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to fighting cybercrime through arrests, prosecutions, and public awareness campaigns. He called on parents, community leaders, and educators to actively discourage young people from engaging in internet fraud.
Olukoyede warned that if the trend continues, it could have serious long-term consequences for Nigeria’s international relations, business opportunities, and the future prospects of Nigerian youths seeking education or employment overseas. His remarks serve as a stern warning to cybercriminals and a call for all Nigerians to uphold integrity and lawful conduct to protect the nation’s image.
