Gombe Government Official, Seven Others Die in Electrocution Tragedy


A tragic electrocution incident in the Tudun Wada Pantami area of Gombe metropolis has claimed the lives of eight people, including Mohammed Yusuf Kulani, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Special Duties in Gombe State. The tragedy occurred late Friday night, June 13, 2025, following a powerful surge from a major electricity transformer that caused high-tension wires to break and sparked fatal electrocutions.

Eyewitnesses reported that power was initially restored weakly before surging strongly, leading to the breaking of electrical wires and electrocuting anyone who came near. Victims were rushed to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe, where five died instantly, and three others succumbed to their injuries the following morning.

The Gombe State Police Command confirmed the incident, reporting five deaths and 13 injuries, with victims receiving medical care at various health facilities. The deceased bodies have been deposited across three morgues in the state. The Police Commissioner, Bello Yahaya, expressed deep condolences to the families and promised a thorough investigation to determine the causes and ensure accountability.

The state Head of Civil Service also confirmed the death of the permanent secretary. Authorities and emergency teams continue to work to prevent similar future occurrences, urging the public to cooperate and remain calm.

This tragedy has deeply shocked the Gombe community, highlighting concerns over electrical infrastructure safety and emergency response readiness.
