Hakeem Baba-Ahmed Calls on Atiku to Step Aside for New Blood Ahead of 2027 Elections

Former political adviser to President Bola Tinubu, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has ignited a national debate by urging former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to step aside and not contest the 2027 presidential election. Speaking on AIT’s Focus Nigeria, Baba-Ahmed described Atiku as a “hero of democracy” who, after multiple attempts to win the presidency and a long political career, should now assume a fatherly role by mentoring younger candidates rather than seeking power himself.

Baba-Ahmed also named former governors Rotimi Amaechi and Nasir El-Rufai as figures who should similarly withdraw from presidential ambitions to make way for fresh perspectives and new leadership. He emphasized the need for “new blood, perspective, and people” in Nigerian politics, warning against the repetition of established political faces that have been entrenched in power for decades.

He suggested that Atiku’s continued pursuit of the presidency, especially as he approaches 80 years old, could hinder the emergence of energetic and innovative leaders. Baba-Ahmed expressed hope that Atiku would condition his withdrawal on the inclusion of younger, more dynamic candidates who can offer a genuine alternative to the current administration.

The call has sparked widespread discussion across political circles and the public, reflecting growing sentiments for generational change in Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the crucial 2027 elections. Baba-Ahmed’s remarks highlight the tension between established political figures and the demand for renewal within the country’s dominant parties.
