On the night of Friday, June 13, 2025, suspected armed herdsmen launched a deadly attack on Yelewata community in Benue State around 10:00 pm, leaving several people dead and many others injured. Early reports indicate that at least 16 individuals sustained varying degrees of injuries, while the exact death toll is still being confirmed as authorities continue to gather information from the scene.
In response to distress calls, operatives of the Nigerian Army and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were dispatched to the area but were ambushed en route in Daudu. The ambush resulted in the tragic deaths of two soldiers and one Civil Defence officer, who have been mourned as heroes by the community.
Survivors of the attack are currently receiving treatment at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH) in Makurdi. Medical personnel have urgently appealed for blood donations to save the lives of the injured. Citizens and humanitarian organizations have also been called upon to provide immediate support to the victims.
The attack is part of a continuing wave of violence in Benue State, which has seen frequent deadly assaults attributed to herdsmen in recent months, causing widespread fear, displacement, and calls for enhanced security measures.
“My heartfelt condolences go to the families of the victims, especially our fallen heroes in uniform,” said a concerned resident, who refrained from sharing graphic images out of respect for the victims and the community.
Authorities are intensifying investigations and security operations to restore peace and prevent further attacks in the region.
