Nigerian Gospel Singer New Jerusalem Dies at 53, Leaving Lasting Legacy in Christian Music

Israel Terhemba Ikyereve, popularly known by his stage name New Jerusalem, has passed away at the age of 53. The renowned Nigerian gospel singer was celebrated for transforming traditional Tiv Swange music into powerful Christian songs that resonated deeply within and beyond Nigeria’s borders.

News of his death has sparked widespread mourning across Benue State, especially within the Christian community, where he was revered for his impactful gospel ministry. Former Governor of Benue State, Chief Samuel Ortom, paid tribute to New Jerusalem, recalling how the singer’s music touched his heart and inspired a lasting personal relationship with him and his family. Ortom also highlighted the global reach of Ikyereve’s music, recounting an instance where his songs were featured in an international program in Australia.

The late gospel artist is survived by his wife, fellow gospel singer Deborah Msendoo Ikyereve, four children, and several relatives. His burial is scheduled for Saturday, July 5, 2025, at Sati Agirigi, Mbamo, Shitile, in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State.

Chief Ortom pledged continued support to the bereaved family and the New Jerusalem Gospel Music Troupe, promising not to abandon them after the burial. The family expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support during the late singer’s illness and after his passing.

New Jerusalem’s unique fusion of Tiv cultural music with Christian themes has left an indelible mark on Nigerian gospel music, ensuring his legacy will endure through his songs and the lives he touched.
