Nigerian Rapper M.I Abaga Regrets Supporting APC, Says It’s Not the Party of His Dreams

Ace Nigerian rapper Jude Abaga, popularly known as M.I, has publicly expressed regret over his decision to support the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the 2015 general elections. Speaking on a recent episode of the Menism podcast, M.I revealed that his initial backing of the APC was motivated by his dissatisfaction with the then-ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which he perceived as deeply corrupt.

M.I explained, “Yes, I supported APC because at that time, I felt that the PDP government was very corrupt. I was part of the people who lifted my voice to say, ‘Let us stand and bring in democracy.’” However, he admitted that the APC has since failed to live up to the expectations he once had, stating, “APC unfortunately isn’t the APC of my dreams.”

The rapper also addressed the criticism he received after tweeting about the herdsmen attacks in Benue State, where many reminded him of his political support for APC. He said, “I tweeted about the thing that happened in Benue and a lot of people were saying, ‘But M.I, you supported the APC.’”

Reflecting on his political stance, M.I acknowledged the human element of error, emphasizing that despite trying to do what is right, one can still be wrong. He has since shifted his focus from political commentary to practical nation-building efforts. “I work in the creative sector, and the creative sector can empower millions of young people. If the country isn’t set up with leaders that can provide jobs, that doesn’t mean I can’t create opportunities,” he stated.

M.I is now committed to using his music and platform to collaborate with youths and contribute positively to Nigeria’s development, advocating for empowerment and accountability among leaders. His candid admission highlights a broader disillusionment among Nigerians regarding political leadership and the urgent need for transformative change.
