Tragedy struck the Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State as 76-year-old retired Army Major Joe Ajayi died in the custody of kidnappers, even after his family paid a substantial ransom for his release.
Major Ajayi was abducted from his residence in Odo-Ape on May 21, 2025, when armed men stormed his home, firing shots indiscriminately before whisking him away. The kidnappers initially demanded a ransom of N50 million, putting immense pressure on the family.
Sources revealed that Major Ajayi’s health deteriorated rapidly while in captivity due to the denial of his essential medications. The kidnappers reportedly insisted on an additional payment specifically for his medication, a demand the family was unable to meet. As his condition worsened, the abductors eventually reduced their ransom demand to N10 million, giving the family renewed hope for his safe return.
After the ransom was paid, the family was directed to a location with the promise that Major Ajayi would be released. However, upon arrival, they were met with heartbreak, finding his lifeless body on the floor. His remains have since been deposited at the Kabba Specialist Hospital mortuary.
Major Ajayi was not only a respected military veteran but also served as Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Kabba-Bunu Chapter, earning widespread respect in his community.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the region, coming on the heels of the recent abduction of a first-class traditional ruler, Oba James Dada Ogunyanda, in the same state. The tragic death of Major Ajayi underscores the growing insecurity and the urgent need for authorities to address the menace of kidnapping in Kogi State and across Nigeria.
