A tragic incident unfolded on Sunday, June 15, 2025, when an old iron bridge over the Indrayani River near Kundamala village in Pune district, Maharashtra, collapsed, killing at least two people and injuring 32 others. The bridge, frequented by tourists and picnickers, gave way suddenly in the afternoon, plunging many into the swollen river below.
The collapse occurred after several days of heavy rains that had swollen the river, although it was not raining at the time of the incident. Rescue operations were immediately launched by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), local police, and fire services. Several people were rescued from the river, with six reported in critical condition and hospitalized.
Authorities fear that as many as 20 to 25 people may still be trapped under the debris of the collapsed bridge. Emergency teams are working urgently to locate and rescue those missing.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, confirming the deployment of rescue teams and promising swift relief efforts. He cautioned that the full extent of casualties was still being assessed.
This incident has shocked the local community and tourists alike, highlighting concerns over the safety of aging infrastructure in popular public areas.
