6,800 Nigerians Killed in First Half of 2025 as Insecurity Worsens Under Tinubu

Nigeria has recorded a staggering 6,800 deaths linked to violent attacks and insecurity in the first half of 2025, marking a sharp 19 percent increase compared to the same period last year, according to the latest Nigeria Security Report by Beacon Security and Intelligence Limited (BSIL). The report highlights a troubling escalation in fatalities amid ongoing challenges posed by insurgency, banditry, communal clashes, and kidnappings across the country.

Despite a significant 48 percent drop in security incidents in June—from 895 in May to 465—and a 14 percent reduction in fatalities that month, the overall security situation remains dire. Abductions also fell sharply by nearly 75 percent in June, offering a cautious glimmer of hope. However, civilian casualties continue to represent over 72 percent of all deaths, underscoring the heavy toll on non-combatants.

The report identifies Zamfara State as the deadliest hotspot, with 1,088 fatalities and 1,755 abductions recorded in the first half of the year. The North-West region remains the epicenter of kidnappings, accounting for 72 percent of all reported cases. Meanwhile, farmer-herder conflicts have intensified in the North-Central region, contributing significantly to the death toll.

Analysts warn that insecurity is likely to persist in the short term, driven by coordinated banditry, insurgency, and worsening socio-economic conditions such as poverty and food scarcity. The involvement of foreign-backed armed groups further complicates efforts to restore peace. The report calls for enhanced community vigilance, improved security coordination, and targeted social interventions to address the root causes of violence.

President Bola Tinubu’s administration faces mounting criticism for its inability to effectively contain the escalating violence, with many Nigerians expressing frustration over the worsening security crisis despite government efforts.

The report’s sobering statistics serve as a stark reminder of the urgent need for comprehensive strategies to stabilize Nigeria’s volatile security landscape and protect vulnerable populations.
