The Deeper Life Bible Church has called on the Lagos State Government to provide appropriate compensation following the demolition of its building at 36 Aina Street, Lawanson, Surulere. The church rejected an initial offer of ₦10 million from the Surulere Local Government, insisting instead on either a fair monetary valuation based on market value or the allocation of alternative land within the same area to continue its religious activities without disruption.
The demolition, carried out by the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) on May 27, 2025, has raised serious concerns among church members about the legality of the action. The church’s spokesperson, Taiwo Kupolati, emphasized the need for an independent and thorough property valuation to ensure just compensation. He also revealed that the church has lodged a formal complaint with the Acting Inspector-General of Police at Zone 2 Headquarters, seeking protection for its members against intimidation or harassment while the legal dispute is ongoing.
The Deeper Life Bible Church has maintained that it holds valid ownership documents and court orders affirming its rights to the property. Despite a court injunction intended to restrain demolition, the local government proceeded with the demolition, prompting the church to appeal for justice and adherence to due process.
In response, Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotoso, clarified that the state government did not order the demolition and that the matter was handled by the local government. He assured that the state government holds the church in high regard and that discussions are underway between government representatives and the church to resolve the issue amicably.
The church has condemned what it describes as a pattern of systematic harassment and unlawful targeting of its properties by various government agencies in Lagos, calling for respect for religious freedom, property rights, and the rule of law.
