Abia Governor Alex Otti Demands Formal Apology from Labour Party Factions for Reconciliation

Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti has called on the two factional leaders of the Labour Party, Julius Abure and Lamidi Apapa, to tender formal apologies as a precondition for their reintegration into the party. Otti made the appeal on Friday during the inauguration of Senators Nenadi Usman and Darlington Nwokocha as interim National Chairman and Secretary of the Labour Party respectively. According to him, the leadership aims to foster unity and is not interested in expelling any members but insists that a written apology is necessary to move forward with reconciliation.

Governor Otti urged members, particularly Julius Abure’s faction, to humble themselves, respect the Supreme Court judgment, and work together to rebuild the party into a genuine people's alternative. He stated, “We are calling on aggrieved members of LP including Julius Abure to reconcile with the party. We are not interested in expelling anybody. All we are asking them to do is to write a letter of apology so that the interim leaders of the party can recall them for us to work with them.”

The appeal comes amid a bitter leadership crisis within the Labour Party, with rival factions disputing the party’s control and legitimacy. While Otti supports the Nenadi Usman-led faction recognized by the Supreme Court, the Julius Abure-led group has condemned the factional NEC meetings as illegal and accused Otti of misusing state resources. Despite these tensions, Otti continues to advocate for peace, emphasizing that no individual is bigger than the party and calling for a united front ahead of the 2027 elections.

This ongoing discord highlights the challenges facing the Labour Party as it seeks to heal internal divisions and present a strong, cohesive opposition ahead of Nigeria’s forthcoming general elections.
