China is rapidly advancing the digital transformation of its agricultural sector as part of a comprehensive strategy to enhance productivity, sustainability, and rural revitalisation by 2025. The government’s 2019–2025 plan emphasizes integrating cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), big data, drones, 5G, robotics, and cloud computing into farming practices to create “smart agriculture.” This digital shift aims to improve efficiency in crop monitoring, irrigation, pest control, and supply chain management while promoting green and sustainable farming methods.
Significant progress has been made, with broadband and 4G coverage reaching nearly 100% of rural administrative villages, enabling farmers to access digital tools and platforms. The agricultural digital economy is projected to account for 15% of China’s agricultural value-added output by 2025. Local governments actively support farmers through training programs, including livestreaming sales and blockchain applications for food safety and traceability.
Technological innovations, such as drones for crop surveillance and automated irrigation systems, have helped mitigate natural disaster risks and optimize resource use, particularly in major grain-producing regions like Henan. The digital transformation also fosters rural income growth, job creation, and social inclusiveness by reducing labor intensity and improving market access.
China’s experience highlights the potential of digital agriculture to address food security challenges, environmental sustainability, and rural development, setting a model for other countries pursuing smart and sustainable agricultural futures.
