Dino Melaye Resigns from PDP, Slams Party’s Inability to Rescue Nigeria—Joins ADC

Former Kogi West senator and PDP 2023 governorship candidate Dino Melaye has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing what he describes as the party’s “lack of potency and capacity” to rescue Nigeria from its current political challenges. In a resignation letter dated July 4, 2025, and publicly disclosed on July 31, Melaye addressed the party’s Ward 1 chairman in Aiyetoro Gbede, Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State, stating:

“This decision has become imperative due to the lack of potency and capacity by the party to deliver the Nigerian people from the prevailing political cankerworms that have eaten deeply into the fabric of our dear nation. Having carefully reflected on the state of the party, I can no longer in good conscience participate in its activities or support its agenda.”

Melaye, a prominent ally of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve under the PDP but made it clear his withdrawal is immediate and covers all levels of involvement in the party.

His exit comes as part of a wave of high-profile resignations and realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, following recent departures of other political heavyweights including Atiku Abubakar and ex-Senate President David Mark.

Shortly after his resignation, Melaye officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), joining a growing coalition of opposition figures aiming to build a united front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next elections. At an ADC meeting in Abuja, Melaye described the platform as a “credible alternative” for Nigerians seeking relief from widespread hardship and insecurity, and promised to help drive a new wave of political change.

Melaye’s move underscores the intensifying contest for Nigeria’s political future, as opposition leaders consolidate forces and seek to reshape the landscape before the landmark 2027 elections.
