FG Debunks Fake News on 2025 WAEC, NECO Examinations Cancellation

The Federal Government has firmly denied an online report falsely claiming the cancellation of the 2025 West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and National Examinations Council (NECO) examinations due to widespread malpractice. In an official statement by Boriowo Folasade, Director of Press and Public Relations for the Federal Ministry of Education, the government clarified that the 2025 WAEC exams concluded successfully with only a few isolated cases of malpractice, all of which were promptly addressed by the relevant authorities. The ongoing NECO examinations are reportedly progressing smoothly, with no widespread malpractice incidents recorded.

The Ministry described the viral report as “entirely fabricated, misleading, and intended to cause unnecessary panic and confusion.” It stressed that no official communication of widespread malpractice had been received from WAEC, NECO, or any examination body. The government urged students, parents, and the public to rely only on verified updates from official Ministry, WAEC, and NECO channels.

Key Points:

  • The 2025 WAEC exams are successfully completed, with only minor, swiftly managed incidents of malpractice.
  • There is no report or plan to cancel NECO exams; they are ongoing without disruptions.
  • The fake statement which purported to announce a cancellation due to mass cheating, leaked questions, and the use of artificial intelligence to facilitate exam fraud has been labelled baseless by the Ministry.
  • WAEC has also appealed to the public to disregard the fabricated notice and seek information from its official communications only.

The Ministry emphasized that anyone found spreading false information will be investigated and prosecuted, reaffirming its commitment to transparent and accountable conduct in education administration.
