Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari will be laid to rest in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, on Monday. Buhari passed away at 4:30 pm on Sunday in a London clinic, where he had been receiving treatment for an undisclosed illness.
The news of Buhari’s death was confirmed by his former media spokesman, Garba Shehu, who made the announcement on Sunday via X (formerly Twitter). In response to the passing, President Bola Tinubu expressed his condolences and directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to London. Shettima has been tasked with accompanying Buhari’s body back to Nigeria for the burial in Daura.
Buhari’s burial in his ancestral home follows Islamic traditions and marks the end of an era for one of Nigeria’s most influential leaders. The nation is expected to observe official mourning as preparations for the funeral proceed.
