Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, Dies at 91 Hours After Former President Buhari’s Passing

Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the revered Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebuland, has passed away at the age of 91. The monarch died peacefully on Sunday, July 13, 2025, just hours after the announcement of the death of his longtime friend, former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, who died in a London clinic after a prolonged illness.

Born on May 10, 1934, Oba Adetona ascended the throne on April 2, 1960, making him one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning traditional rulers. He hailed from the Royal House of Anikinaiya in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, and was widely respected for his leadership, cultural influence, and advocacy for good governance and national unity.

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State expressed profound sadness over the monarch’s death, describing Oba Adetona as a figure whose legacy significantly shaped Ijebuland, Ogun State, and Nigeria at large. The governor noted the poignancy of the monarch’s passing coinciding with that of former President Buhari.

Oba Adetona was known not only as a traditional ruler but also as a symbol of cultural pride and political wisdom among the Yoruba and across Nigeria. His decades-long friendship with Buhari was marked by mutual respect and shared conservative values, both often regarded as moral voices in their respective spheres.

The monarch’s death marks the end of an era for Ijebuland and traditional rulership in Nigeria. Official confirmations from the palace and Ogun State government have been made, with further details expected as the royal family and authorities prepare for the succession process.

Oba Adetona’s passing is mourned widely, reflecting his stature as a beloved and influential leader whose impact transcended his kingdom.
