The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has supported Governor Monday Okpebholo’s position that former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi should inform the Edo State government before visiting the state.
Speaking in Benin City during the launch of modern mass transit buses, Wike recalled how, during his tenure as Governor of Rivers State, he ensured Obi’s campaign visits were well-coordinated with proper logistics and security support.
He emphasized that a governor must be notified ahead of such visits because they would be held accountable if anything untoward happens. Wike dismissed claims that Governor Okpebholo threatened Obi following his recent visit but reiterated that the governor’s insistence on prior notice was correct and justified given the responsibility for the visitor’s security.
The statement reflects ongoing concerns about managing political visits in Edo amid rising tensions and underscores the importance of protocol and coordination between visiting politicians and host state governments.
