Group Demands Justice for Activist Assaulted by Suspected Edo Vigilantes

On July 26, 2025, Comrade Okhai Okhani, Convener of the Edo North Unity Forum Worldwide, was brutally attacked, stripped naked, and severely beaten by a group of about 20 armed vigilantes during an award event at the council hall in Auchi, Edo State. The vigilantes were reportedly led by a newly appointed coordinator of the Edo North Vigilante Group, Abubakar Aliu, also called Agbor. The attack followed a social media dispute involving Senator Adams Oshiomhole, leading to suspicions that the assault was politically motivated, possibly used as a tool for intimidation and suppression of dissent linked to Oshiomhole’s political influence.

Despite the severity of the attack and a video circulating showing the violence, the vigilantes involved have not been arrested. The Edo State Police Command said it had opened an investigation, but efforts for justice appear hampered, with allegations that Oshiomhole may be frustrating the process due to control over the vigilante group.

Several Edo citizens' groups have since demanded thorough investigations and justice for Okhani, emphasizing the need to uphold human rights and prevent political violence using state-sponsored groups.

Senator Oshiomhole has publicly distanced himself from the attack, denying involvement and stating he was not present at the event and has no dealings with Okhani. He condemned thuggery and supported peaceful engagement.

This incident has raised concerns about the use of vigilante groups in Edo State for political purposes and the erosion of rule of law.
