The Lagos State High Court granted bail on Monday to activist and influencer Scott Iguma, just three days after he was remanded in custody over a criminal defamation suit linked to his public allegations against real estate firm PWAN. Iguma faces a 10-count charge arising from claims that he published false information defaming PWAN and submitted over 130 petitions from alleged victims to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), accusing PWAN of defrauding customers by selling receipts instead of actual land.
His arrest at the State Criminal Investigation Department in Yaba, Lagos, sparked widespread public outcry and drew support from colleagues and celebrities including Tunde Ednut, VeryDarkMan, Stanley Ontop, and singer Kokopee who condemned the police and PWAN for purportedly trying to silence him.
PWAN’s founder, Augustine Onwumere, denied involvement in Iguma’s arrest, saying he only visited the police to clarify matters after Iguma posted a warning video implying PWAN should be held responsible if anything happened to him.
Following the bail ruling, singer Kokopee confirmed Iguma’s release in a video, stating that Iguma’s legal team is actively working to meet all bail conditions. Kokopee emphasized the importance of resisting oppression and spoke directly to PWAN, challenging them to prove their innocence if they claim to be blameless.
When contacted, Lagos State Police spokesperson CSP Benjamin Hundeyin declined further comment, noting the matter remains before the court.
Scott Iguma’s bail marks a significant development in a case widely seen as emblematic of broader concerns about corporate accountability, freedom of speech, and the misuse of legal processes to intimidate activists exposing fraud.
