A section of the building at Oyorokoto Community Primary School in Andoni Local Government Area of Rivers State partially collapsed on Tuesday, leaving the head teacher severely injured and raising serious concerns about the safety of students. The incident occurred during school hours, but fortunately, no pupils were physically harmed, though there was widespread panic and confusion.
Eyewitnesses shared with Daily Mentor that the dilapidated structure suddenly gave way while the head teacher was teaching in class. He was struck on the head by falling debris and immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical treatment. The affected school building had long been in a state of disrepair, but teachers continued to use it due to lack of alternative classrooms and their dedication to educating children in this riverine community.
Community members and parents have since called on the Rivers State Government and education authorities to urgently conduct a thorough structural assessment of the entire school to prevent a potential tragedy. They demand swift renovation efforts to ensure the safety of both pupils and staff.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by educational institutions in underserved areas, where inadequate infrastructure poses significant risks. The collapse deepens fears of a major disaster if urgent measures are not taken to improve school facilities in the region.
