A potentially serious aviation incident was narrowly averted on Sunday morning, July 13, 2025, when an Air Peace flight from Lagos to Port Harcourt veered off the runway upon landing at Port Harcourt International Airport in Rivers State. The aircraft, operating as Flight P47190, skidded slightly off the runway but came to a safe stop without sustaining any damage.

Passengers on board, totaling 127, were safely and calmly evacuated from the aircraft with no reported injuries. Videos circulating on social media showed passengers disembarking while carrying their luggage, underscoring the orderly evacuation.

Osifo-Whiskey Efe, spokesperson for Air Peace, confirmed the incident in a statement, assuring the public of the airline’s commitment to safety. He said, “Air Peace confirms that its Flight P47190 operating from Lagos to Port Harcourt this morning had a runway excursion after landing safely at the Port Harcourt International Airport. The aircraft veered slightly off the runway without any damage. All passengers disembarked safely and calmly, and no injuries were reported.”

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) also confirmed the occurrence, noting that safety protocols were promptly activated and all passengers were accounted for. FAAN warned that flights bound for Port Harcourt might experience delays as investigations and runway assessments continue.

Preliminary reports suggest that the aircraft’s excursion may have been influenced by weather conditions, including rain and wet runway surfaces, which can reduce directional control during landing. Investigations by relevant aviation authorities are ongoing to determine the exact cause.

This incident adds to recent concerns about runway excursions in Nigerian aviation, prompting calls for enhanced safety measures and rigorous operational oversight. Despite the scare, the swift and professional response ensured that no casualties occurred, maintaining confidence in emergency preparedness at Nigerian airports.

Passengers and the flying public have been reassured that Air Peace and airport authorities remain dedicated to upholding the highest safety standards in all operations. Further updates will be provided as investigations progress.
