Former Big Brother Naija star Anita Natacha Akide, popularly known as Tacha, has strongly criticized today’s Nigerian youth for their perceived lack of involvement in the nation’s political and social struggles. In a viral post on social media (X), she described her generation as the "dumbest and most cowardly," expressing disappointment that unlike previous generations, young Nigerians today are unwilling to fight for national change.
Tacha contrasted the current youth with earlier Nigerians highlighting that figures such as former President Buhari were actively involved in coups and struggles for what they believed in during their youth. She lamented that today’s young people are more focused on "japa" (leaving the country), creating online content, and chasing comfort rather than participating in nation-building.
She stated:
“Listen, my generation of Nigerians is the dumbest and most cowardly… funny how we blame the ones before us for ruining Nigeria, but at least they had the guts to fight. What are today’s 20-year-olds up to? Japa. Believe me when I say, we’ve not just failed the next generation… we’ve buried it.”
Tacha also emphasized her own activism by saying she uses her voice, shows up, and refuses to be silent. Her critique was aimed at calling out a broader generational malaise rather than herself or any individual.
Her remarks have sparked significant online attention and debate, especially given that she recently relocated to the UK, which some critics see as ironic. However, Tacha maintains her message is a wake-up call urging young Nigerians to prioritize the country’s interests over personal comfort.
This commentary contributes to ongoing conversations about youth engagement, patriotism, and social responsibility in Nigeria amid current economic and political challenges.
