The National Assembly complex in Abuja has witnessed a significant boost in security ahead of a highly anticipated return by suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. The Kogi Central lawmaker, who was suspended for six months earlier this year following allegations of misconduct, announced her intention to resume her seat during plenary on Tuesday, July 22, citing a recent Federal High Court ruling by Justice Binta Nyako that declared her suspension excessive and advised her reinstatement.
Despite the senator’s firm stance, the Senate leadership, through the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, insists the court judgment was only an advisory opinion, not binding on the legislature.
This disagreement has led to heightened tensions and a visible armed security presence at the Assembly gates to prevent any breakdown of order. Supporters of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan have rallied behind her decision, with notable activists like Aisha Yesufu publicly pledging solidarity in the face of opposition from the Senate President’s legal team, which has appealed the ruling at the Court of Appeal.
The clash underscores ongoing political friction and legal battles surrounding the senator’s suspension, which many view as intertwined with earlier accusations she made against Senate leadership. As the situation unfolds, the National Assembly remains on edge, reflecting the broader challenges of governance, rule of law, and legislative authority in Nigeria.
