Shooter Kills Four, Including Police Officer, in Midtown Manhattan Office Tower Rampage

A tragic mass shooting shattered the evening in Midtown Manhattan on Monday, when a 27-year-old gunman armed with a high-powered rifle opened fire inside a prominent office building at 345 Park Avenue, leaving four people dead including an NYPD officer and another wounded before taking his own life.

According to New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, surveillance footage showed the suspect, identified as Shane D. Tamura from Las Vegas, exiting a double-parked BMW and entering the building just before 6:30p.m. with an M4-style rifle. Tamura first shot and killed Officer Didarul Islam, who was working a security detail at the building. He then turned his weapon on a woman seeking shelter in the lobby, shooting her before continuing his rampage.

Tamura proceeded to the elevator banks, where he shot a security guard behind a desk and wounded another civilian. He then took the elevator to the 33rd floor, where he entered the offices of Rudin Management, the building’s owner, and killed another person before fatally shooting himself. Among the victims, at least one was a well-known executive at Blackstone, and another was a staff member at the business. A fifth victim, critically injured, underwent surgery and is now in stable condition.

Authorities recovered a note from the shooter referencing grievances with the National Football League (NFL) and claims about potentially having chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) a brain disease linked to head injuries. Investigators said Tamura appeared to be targeting the NFL offices but mistakenly exited on the wrong floor, carrying out the shootings at Rudin Management instead.

The entire area was locked down through the night as police conducted a floor-by-floor search, and the building home to the NFL, Blackstone, KPMG, and other major firms remained secured until Tuesday morning. The motive remains under investigation.

This tragedy comes amid ongoing national debate over workplace and public safety in America’s major cities a devastating reminder of the human cost of gun violence and the urgent calls for reform.
