The Super Falcons of Nigeria displayed a masterclass performance to storm into the semi-finals of the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) with a resounding 5-0 victory over the Copper Queens of Zambia on Friday in Casablanca.
Nigeria started the quarter-final match emphatically, with centre-back Osinachi Ohale heading in a cross from Esther Okoronkwo as early as the second minute, putting the Super Falcons ahead instantly.
Despite Zambia’s attempts to regain control and a stern challenge from captain Barbara Banda, the Nigerian side maintained dominance throughout the match. Just after the 30-minute mark, Okoronkwo doubled the lead by expertly controlling a precise cross from Rasheedat Ajibade before netting from close range.
On the stroke of half-time, Chinwendu Ihezuo capitalised on a defensive error to slot home Nigeria’s third goal, marking her third goal of the tournament and strengthening her candidacy for the top scorer award.
After the interval, Zambia enjoyed some possession but struggled to break through Nigeria’s robust defense. The Super Falcons extended their lead in the 68th minute when Tosin Demehin nodded in another perfect delivery from Okoronkwo.
The scoring was capped off by substitute Folashade Ijamilusi, who slammed home Ajibade’s assist in added time to complete the comprehensive 5-0 scoreline.
The result sees Nigeria, the nine-time WAFCON champions, as the first team to secure a semi-final spot. They will next face the winner of the South Africa versus Senegal quarter-final clash, scheduled for next Tuesday.
This victory underlines the Super Falcons’ commanding form in the tournament, as they remain unbeaten and have yet to concede a goal.
