Temporary Disruption of SIM-Related Services Hits Nigeria Amid NIMC Platform Migration

The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) has announced a nationwide temporary disruption of SIM-related services across all mobile networks. This interruption affects SIM registration, SIM swaps, replacements, new activations, and Mobile Number Portability (MNP) services.

The disruption follows a directive from the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) mandating Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to transition to a new identity verification platform. ALTON explained that while this new platform aims to enhance the integrity and efficiency of identity management in Nigeria, the migration process has introduced unforeseen technical challenges that have temporarily hindered real-time identity verification services essential for SIM-related transactions.

As a result, millions of subscribers nationwide are currently unable to perform SIM swaps, replacements, activate new SIM cards, or port their numbers between networks. ALTON has advised the public to postpone any SIM-related requests or visits to service centers until further notice to avoid inconvenience.

ALTON assured that its member operators are working closely with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), NIMC, and other relevant authorities to resolve the integration issues as quickly as possible. The association apologized for the disruption and reaffirmed its commitment to providing secure, reliable, and high-quality telecommunications services to Nigerians.
