Spectator Knocked Down by INEOS-Grenadiers Car During Tour de France Stage 14

Tour de France chaos: INEOS-Grenadiers car hits spectator during stage 14, prompting apology and official fine.

A dramatic incident unfolded during Saturday’s 14th stage of the Tour de France as a spectator was hit and knocked to the ground by an INEOS-Grenadiers team car on the Col du Peyresourde in the Pyrenees. The incident, captured by television cameras, showed the support vehicle clipping a fan who was filming the race with a mobile phone about 200 meters from the summit. The impact caused the bystander to roll onto the car’s hood before falling to the ground, with the car immediately stopping after the collision.

The race jury issued a fine of 5,000 Swiss francs (around $6,200) to INEOS-Grenadiers sports director Oliver Cookson, citing “improper conduct that jeopardized spectators’ safety,” and handed him a yellow card. Under race rules, accumulating yellow cards within a set period can lead to a suspension.

The team issued a formal apology, stating, “Our thoughts and sincere apologies go out to the fan who was accidentally and regretfully hit by one of our race cars while supporting the riders during today’s stage. Like all teams, we take great care to maintain a safe race environment for everyone – including the passionate fans who make our sport so special”.

Local police have begun investigating the accident, while officials and race organizers reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring spectator safety. As of Saturday evening, there have been no official updates about the spectator’s condition.

The incident has reignited discussions about safety measures at major cycling events, especially as roads become increasingly crowded with enthusiastic fans during crucial mountain stages. The INEOS-Grenadiers’ swift apology and the swift penalty underscore the constant risks faced by both athletes and supporters in the sport’s most iconic race.
