The University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED) in Ondo State has plunged into mourning following the assassination of its Registrar, Mr. Ezekiel Imoleayo Adeniran, who was found dead in his Akure residence in the early hours of Thursday, July 17, 2025. The 41-year-old had been appointed the third substantive Registrar of the institution in January 2025 and served diligently until his untimely death.
The Ondo State Police Command confirmed the incident as an assassination. Police Public Relations Officer, SP Olayinka Ayanlade, revealed that intelligence indicates two unidentified men emerged from a nearby bush and forced a substance down Adeniran’s throat, leading to his death. However, the precise circumstances and location remain under investigation.
“We are doing everything possible to unravel the lies surrounding this case and bring the perpetrators to justice. We urge anyone with information to come forward; confidentiality will be ensured,” Ayanlade stated.
UNIMED’s management, through its Head of Media and Protocol, Mr. Isaac Oluyi, expressed profound shock and sadness over the loss of their colleague. A statement highlighted that Mr. Adeniran was still at duty as recently as Monday, July 14, and that the cause of death was yet to be formally determined.
The tragic assassination has sent shockwaves through the university community and Ondo State at large, raising concerns about security and the circumstances surrounding the Registrar’s death. Authorities have launched a thorough investigation as public appeals continue for eyewitnesses or anyone with relevant information to assist law enforcement.
Mr. Adeniran’s dedication during his brief tenure and the suddenness of his death have left colleagues and stakeholders grieving, with prayers offered for his family and the university community during this difficult time.
