The Hisbah Command under the Bauchi State Sharia Commission has introduced strict new regulations governing social events in the state, including a ban on Disk Jockeys (DJs) and restrictions preventing women from attending male gatherings.
In a statement dated July 16, 2025, and signed by Barrister Aminu Balarabe Isah, Permanent Commissioner of Hisbah, the Commission cited rising public complaints over social vices and breaches of public peace at weddings, birthdays, and other ceremonies as reasons for the new rules.
The official document, titled ‘Guidelines Governing the Conduct of Marriage Ceremonies and Other Festivals in Bauchi State,’ outlines several prohibitions: mixing of opposite sexes during events, dancing between genders in the presence of children, consumption and sale of intoxicants, and admission of persons carrying weapons.
Additional measures include gender-segregated seating, pausing activities during prayer times, adherence to traditional dress codes, and banning of abusive or blasphemous language against individuals or authorities.
Hisbah also outlawed certain traditional and cultural events such as Sharo, Shadi, Garaya, and Kauyawa Day, along with DJ entertainment, Gala events, and Aloba celebrations. Gambling, prostitution, pornography, and any birthday parties deemed to promote immorality are strictly prohibited.
The circular mandates that all recreational centers, clubs, and cultural organizations comply with the directives or face sanctions.
Hisbah Commander Muhammad Muhammad Bununu confirmed the issuance of the circular, underscoring the agency’s commitment to maintaining public morals and order in Bauchi State.
