Athletes representing various states in Nigeria have begun arriving in Asaba, the capital of Delta State, for the 9th edition of the National Youth Games (NYG). The Delegation Registration Meetings (DRM) held from August 21 to August 24, paving the way for the arrival and commencement days observed on August 26 and 27, respectively. The much-anticipated opening ceremony is scheduled for Friday, August 29, at the Stephen Keshi Stadium.
Mallam Shehu Diko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), is expected to officially declare the games open on behalf of President Bola Tinubu. Team Delta, historically dominant and current medal leaders, has been in closed camp in preparation for the event. The immediate past Director General of the Delta State Sports Commission (DSSC), Mr Festus Owhojero, now Executive Assistant to the Delta State Governor on Sports, reassured that the DSSC Chairman, Joshua Oborevbori, and his board are committed to delivering a well-organized tournament promoting unity, discipline, and excellence through sports.
Team Delta, the reigning medal champion since the Games' inception, has been preparing in a closed camp and is poised to defend its top position. This year marks Delta State’s third consecutive time hosting the Games since the inaugural event in 2013 was held in the Federal Capital Territory. The upcoming tournament promises to be a vibrant showcase of Nigeria’s next generation of sports stars.
