Former Senator Dino Melaye has accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of being compromised by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), claiming the PDP leadership lacks the capacity and independence to rescue Nigeria. While Melaye previously cited the party’s “lack of potency” as his reason for resigning, his recent statements suggest deeper concerns about the PDP’s integrity and susceptibility to APC influence.
Speaking in a recent interview and social media posts in early August 2025, Melaye alleged that key PDP members and structures have been “bought” or co-opted by APC, undermining the opposition’s ability to present a unified front against the ruling party ahead of the 2027 elections. He expressed frustration with what he described as internal backdoor dealings and no meaningful opposition strategy.
Melaye, who formally resigned from the PDP in July and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), emphasized his hopes to build a credible alternative away from what he perceives as PDP’s erosion. However, he also acknowledged that no party is perfect, noting that ADC too has flaws but offers potential as an opposition platform.
These revelations come amid a wave of resignations and defections from PDP members, fueling public debate about the future of Nigeria’s opposition politics and the possibility of cross-party collusion.
