The Federal Executive Council has approved a sweeping ₦712.26 billion plan for the full rehabilitation, modernization, and upgrade of Terminal One at Lagos’ Murtala Mohammed International Airport. The comprehensive renovation set to last 22 months was announced by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, following approval at a cabinet meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu.
Keyamo detailed that the project, awarded to China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), will completely strip the old terminal down to its structural elements before rebuilding it with new mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems. Unlike previous patchwork repairs, this overhaul aims to deliver a state-of-the-art terminal capable of meeting global aviation standards, boosting both passenger experience and airport security. The renovation will be funded through the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund.
Alongside the main terminal renovation, the government is also investing in expanded apron space, perimeter security upgrades with advanced surveillance, and additional infrastructure to support operational efficiency at Nigeria’s busiest aviation gateway. The ₦712 billion allocation makes this one of the largest single investments in Nigeria’s aviation sector in recent decades.
According to Minister Keyamo, the transformation underscores the administration’s commitment toward world-class infrastructure and is expected to create significant economic and social benefits, positioning Lagos as a major international air traffic hub in Africa.
