German Football Federation Investigates Racism at Cup Matches Amid FIFA Condemnation

The German Football Federation (DFB) has launched investigations into incidents of alleged racist abuse during two German Cup matches played over the weekend. Schalke’s Christopher Antwi-Adjei reported being subjected to racist abuse from fans during their 1-0 extra-time victory over Lokomotiv Leipzig, leading to a brief suspension of the match. Despite reporting the abuse to officials, Antwi-Adjei was booed by home fans throughout the game.

In another incident, a substitute player from Kaiserslautern experienced racial slurs while warming up during a fixture against lower-league side Eintracht Stahnsdorf. The perpetrator was quickly identified and the match continued without further interruptions.

DFB president Bernd Neuendorf affirmed zero tolerance for racism, emphasizing the federation's commitment to diversity and respect. Meanwhile, FIFA President Gianni Infantino condemned the abuses as "unacceptable" and stressed that football has no place for racism or discrimination. He declared that FIFA’s Players’ Voice Panel will remain in contact with the German federation to ensure appropriate actions are taken.

The incidents highlight ongoing challenges in combating racism in football, particularly in matches involving clubs from former East Germany. Authorities are actively investigating, with public pressure mounting for swift justice and stronger measures to protect players.

These events come amid wider global efforts to address racism in sport, underscoring the need for continued vigilance and unified action to uphold respect within football communities.
